Computerization of White Collar Jobs

We investigate the impact of computerization white-collar jobs on wages and employment. Using online job postings from 2007 2010-2016 for office administrative support (OAS) jobs, we show that when firms adopt new software at job-title level they increase skills required applicants. Furthermore, change task content such broadening them to include tasks associated with higher-skill functions. aggregate these patterns local labor-market level, instrumenting technology adoption national measures. find a 1 standard deviation in OAS usages reduces employment occupations by about percentage point increases college graduates over 3 percent. negative wage spillovers, falling both workers no experience graduates. These losses are part driven high-skill occupations. results consistent technological inducing realignment assignment across occupations, lending become higher skill hence less risk further automation. In addition, total per population adoption, indicating average gains unequally distributed labor market.
